The Origin of Vantage
Over 22+ years of mentoring actuarial students, Gopal Sir noticed something that didn’t fit the usual explanations for failure. The candidates who kept falling short were, again and again, not
the ones who lacked understanding. They were often among the more capable students in the
room.
The pattern first became undeniable during the COVID-19 lockdown, when a student on her sixth attempt at SP2 asked for something no one had offered her before — not another explanation of
the concepts, but a brutally honest, line-by-line analysis of her own answer scripts. Where, specifically, were the marks disappearing?
That analysis became the first of many. Script after script, student after student, the same three
failure patterns kept resurfacing — patterns that had nothing to do with subject knowledge and
everything to do with execution. Identifying them was the easy part. Building a repeatable methodology to correct them, refined over years of application across hundreds of scripts, was
the real work.
